کشاورزی عمودی (Vertical agriculture)

کشاورزی عمودی به عنوان بخشی از کشاورزی شهری به روش کاشت گیاهان در گلخانه آسمان خراش­ها یا فضاهایی که به طور عمودی در شهرها دیده می­شود. از نظر کارشناسان زراعت، کشاورزی عمودی در آینده به طور گسترده مورد استفاده قرار می­گیرد، زیرا جمعیت  جهان به طور مداوم در حال ازدیاد است و نیاز به زمین­های بیشتری برای کشاورزی محسوس است.

این ایده از دیکسون دسپومیرDickson Despommier ، استاد دانشگاه کلمبیا است که در سال 1999، یک روش رشد مواد غذایی را در آسمان خراش­های شهر ایجاد کرد که تا 33 طبقه امکان گسترش داشت. امروزه چنین پروژه­هایی در بسیاری از کشورها مانند کره جنوبی، ژاپن، ابوظبی و سنگاپور انجام می­شود.

کشاورزی عمودی مزایای بسیاری دارد. می­توان محصولات زراعی را دریک منطقه کوچک­ تر از زمین رشد داد، و البته آب آن می­تواند دوباره بازیافت شود و بارها مورد استفاده قرار گیرد. گیاهان در مواد معدنی رشد می­کنند و به خاک نیاز ندارند. بسیاری از محصولات کشاورزی را می­توان بیش از یک بار در سال برداشت کرد. این شکل جدید کشاورزی همچنین  می­تواند به طبیعت کمک کند و محیط زیست از اشتباهات انسان هنگام کشاورزی مصون بماند. بسیاری از منابع می­تواند ذخیره شود، جنگل­ها می­توانند حفظ شوند و بیابان­زایی محدود گردد. کشاورزی عمودی می­تواند محصول را از بلایای طبیعی مانند تندباد، توفان، خشک­سالی یا سیل محافظت کند. شرایط آب­وهوایی مشابه در طول سال، شرایط ایده­آل برای محصولات کانل را فراهم می­کند.

در روش کشاورزی عمودی باید از نقاط بی‌استفاده در ساختمان‌ها استفاده کرد. بالکن و پشت‌بام ساختمان‌های بلندمرتبه ازجمله مکان‌هایی است که ابداع‌کنندگان این روش به‌عنوان مکان مناسب در فضای شهری برای تولید محصولات کشاورزی از آن یادمی‌کنند.
